The team from Vanderbilt University faced squads from some of the best MBA programs in the United States, responding to a case study involving a private equity portfolio company in the oilfield services/technology sector and the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the situation, including costs & benefits and growth. A panel of 3 investment bankers judged their work, which consisted of 2 valuation models and a 25-slide PowerPoint presentation relevant to the issues raised. Chip Bierbaum and the team from Vanderbilt University took second place; they received a trophy and an invitation for Owen students to return to the competition in 2010.
Chip worked for New Capital Partners, a venture capital/private equity company for the summer. He performed investment analyses, due diligence and deal sourcing. The company focuses on growth stage small and micro-cap health care technology and financial services companies. Currently Chip is an intern for Fault Line Ventures, a venture capital company that invests in health care technology companies, while pursuing his second year studies at the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University. He is also a teaching assistant in Financial Reporting. |

Candidate for MBA degree. Recently participated in a finance competition against 8 other MBA programs. Finished 2nd. A four-man team of MBA students from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management finished second in the Rolanette and Berdon Lawrence Finance Case Competition held on April 17, 2009. The Freeman School of Business at Tulane University hosted the event. Each year since 1997, graduate students from some of the top MBA programs have met to showcase their skills in finance, case analysis, and presentation. Owen students took home the first-place prize in 1997, 2006, and 2008. The Owen team of Chip Bierbaum, Lucas Hohnstein, Nolan Pittman, and Matt Hancock constructed two valuation models and prepared a 25-slide PowerPoint presentation. They received a trophy and an invitation for Owen students to return to the competition next year.
Prior to business school, Chip Bierbaum worked as a proprietary credit trader and credit analyst at Bear Stearns and Calyon Securities. - |
